Step into the kitchen with me as we cook up a dish that’s steeped in history and smothered in rich gravy — Salisbury Steak. Forget what you think you know about this humble classic. This isn’t meatloaf, and it’s definitely not just a hamburger patty. This is savory, seasoned ground beef formed into tender steaks, seared and simmered in a velvety onion gravy that’ll have you licking your fork. 🥩🍽️

Ingredients

🥩 For the Steaks

  • 900g (2 pounds) lean ground beef (85 -90% lean)

  • 60g (½ cup) breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg - beaten

  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

🧅 🍄‍🟫For the Onion Mushroom Gravy

  • 1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced

  • 225g (8 oz) cremini mushrooms (optional but delicious)

  • 480ml (2 cups) low-sodium beef broth

  • 15g (1 tbsp) tomato paste

  • 15ml (1 tbsp) soy sauce

  • 5ml (1 tsp) Worcestershire sauce

  • 10g (2 tsp) cornstarch

  • ¼ tsp salt (or to taste)

  • ¼ tsp black pepper (or to taste)

  • 15ml (1 tbsp) olive oil

  • 15g (1 tbsp) butter

Method

Mix It Up: In a large bowl, combine the beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix it all up and form 6 oval patties.

Sizzle Time: Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the patties until they're no longer pink in the middle, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer them to a plate.

Onion Magic: Reduce the heat to medium, add the sliced onions, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Mushroom Groove: Add the mushrooms (if using-which I hope you are) and cook until the onions are golden brown, another 5 minutes.

Gravy Goodness: Add the tomato paste and stir in for about a minute. Then add beef broth, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir it up! In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with a bit of water or beef broth and add to the skillet. Whisk until the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.

Final Touch: Add the meat patties back to the pan and spoon gravy over the top. Simmer gently for another 5 -10 minutes until the patties warm through and a thermometer reads 165ºF/73ºC

Serve & Enjoy: Garnish with parsley and serve with a veg and over mashed potatoes. Yum!
